I’m starting to think that people have forgotten how to listen.

For those that don’t know me well, I work for a small company, I am the primary employee and there is a part-time worker.  I just had the following conversation (bits between the greater than and less than symbols have been edited for anonymity):

Me: <Company Name>, Michael speaking.
Caller: Hi, it’s Matthew <Last Name> here.
Me: Hi Matthew, how’s it going?
Caller: I was just wondering if you could tell me when I am rostered on next?
Me: Ummm, sorry? I think you have the wrong number.
Caller: Oh, is this the Base Hospital?
Me: No, sorry.
Caller: Ok, seeya.
Me: Seeya

If this person knew how to listen properly I would have expected the conversation to go either of the following two ways.

Option one, if the caller was really listening to what I was saying:

Me: <Company Name>, Michael speaking.
Caller: Sorry, i think I have the wrong number.

Option two, if the caller was listening, but was expecting the hospital and was caught off guard:

Me: <Company Name>, Michael speaking.
Caller: Sorry, what company was this?
Me: <Company Name>
Caller: Sorry, I must have the wrong number.

Seriously, people should learn to listen; and to think, this guy works in a hospital where people’s lives may be at stake.  I hope he’s a cleaner or something and isn’t a doctor or a nurse.

I bought a Crowntail Betta for at work today. Lets see how he likes it there.

I’ve just talked to the Office of Industrial Relations and clarified the terminology of the Award I am on.

Apparently the award does not expressly cover local public holidays.  This means that the conferring of the benefit of a local public holiday to be is solely at the discretion of my employer.  So basically, even though nearly every shop and business in the area will be closed, I will still have to work and I will not get any extra pay.

I hope my boss doesn’t realise this and gives me the half day off anyway.

Damn I hate this job!

Ok, so tomorrow afternoon is a gazetted public holiday for the Lismore area.  This means I should only have to work from 9am until midday and then I get the rest of the day off.

The boss hasn’t mentioned anything about the day, so I figured I’d ask him.  Here’s an outline of the conversation:

Me: are we closing at midday tomorrow for the Lismore Cup public holiday?
Boss: Is the Pope a Jew?

As we all know, the Pope is not Jewish, so I assume that means that I am working.

Now I’m trying to work out what Award I am on.  I assume I’m on the “Clerical and Administrative Employees (State) Award” as a “Grade 3″ employee.  If this is the case then I should get paid double time and a half for working on a public holiday. Here’s the bit of the award that I am using to determine this:

11.1   New Years Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Queen’s Birthday, Eight Hour Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and an additional day’s holiday to be observed pursuant to subclause 11.2, and any other day gazetted as a public holiday for the State shall be holidays for the purposes of this award.
[...]
11.5   For work done on any of the holidays, referred to in subclause 11.1 of this clause, an employee shall be paid double time and one-half and shall be paid for a minimum of four hours’ work.

So, either my boss doesn’t understand the award wage system or he is completely nuts because he will be paying me enough wages to cover 12.5 hours of my work for 5 hours of me being here.

Sometimes getting information about my employment is like drawing blood from a stone.

OMFG, today is a crap day to be stuck in an office.  I’d much rather be down at the beach.

The forecast for Lismore today is:

Mainly Fine. Isolated showers and thunderstorms, mostly this afternoon. Freshening northwest to northeast winds, becoming strong on parts of the coast later.  Maximum 31.

At 11:00am it was already 28.5 degrees; this is a perfect day to be taking a “sickie” (because it makes me sick to have to work on a day like today) and to take the Moke down to the beach.  Instead here I am stuck in an office (alone as per usual) and looking out the window on such a glorious day.  I guess the air-conditioner is some consolation, but it’s crap at its job and barely cools the office down.

Oh well, the things we do for money.  Bring on the day that I can breed fish at home and make a living from it; at least then on a day like today I could bludge and go to the beach.
